Parents

Letter from the President:

Dear Parents,

First off, thank you for taking the time to gather information about the organization your son is considering joining.  We hope that your visit to our website allows you a glimpse of who we are as a social and service fraternity. The Oklahoma Colony of Delta Chi is a fraternity at The University of Oklahoma.  We are proud of all we have to offer to the young men of the university.  Members enjoy a number of benefits that can serve as a "safety net" ensuring an enjoyable and productive college experience.  A member's involvement in our chapter can be divided up into three stages a : Associate Member, Active Member, and Alumni.  With each stage, Delta Chi has a ceremony that helps transition from one to the next:  Associate Member Pinning, Membership Initiation, and an Alumni Ceremony.

Associate Member

As an Associate Member, your son will begin to learn about what it means to be a member of a tightly knit community.  Our new member program lasts eight to ten weeks during the fall or spring semesters.  During this time, the associate members learn about Delta Chi; its history, and its traditions.  Academics are stressed as the foundation for membership.  We believe that first and foremost, we are at The University of Oklahoma for an education.  As a commitment to this ideal, associate members are required to attend study hours at an on-campus library  (this is the largest time commitment that an associate member will experience).   Additionally, the chapter Scholarship Chairman maintains contact with each member and arranges for additional academic assistance if needed (tutoring, extra study hours, etc.)   Associate Members are also invited and encouraged to continue a secondary education and skill development  by participating in the activities of the active chapter: social functions, intramural athletic teams, our organizational committees (community service, philanthropy, too name a few), chapter alumni events and learning business skills by running the business of the fraternity.  Associate Membership is itself fun -  the learning and bonding process is often one of the times Alumni look back upon with the fond memories.   It also gives new members time to prepare for Active Membership in the Bond, where their responsibilities and rewards can be significantly higher.

Active Member

As an Active Member, the brothers take responsibility for the day to day operations of the fraternity.  Every semester, members are elected  from the body to take on leadership roles such as President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms, and Alumni Relations, or called upon to chair committees such as Rush, Social, Scholarship, New Member Education, Public Relations, Philanthropy, etc.  It is the University's objective that each student develop the mental skills requisite for their success upon graduation and in their chosen profession.  Our goal is to supplement that education with the business and social graces so necessary to a man's success. We aim to do this by bringing each young man's skills to the table, along with coaching from alumni and fraternity-sponsored programs, like our like our Regional Leadership Conferences, with the goal to transform each of our men into leaders, scholars, athletes and gentlemen.  It is during one's years as an active member that this formative exchange process is carried out to the fullest.

Alumni

Graduation does not mark the end of a member's involvement in the chapter.  The Oklahoma Colony  is proud to have a strong and active alumni base that provides leadership and guidance to the chapter.  Graduated members may get involved in chapter activities either through participation in the Alumni Board of Trustees (ABT) or the Oklahoma Housing Corporation of the local fraternity.    The ABT is an open organization the helps govern the fraternity.  Parents, business men and women are welcome.  Membership in Delta Chi is not a requirement.   They also have the opportunity to get involved with the fraternity on an national level.  This includes many committees of the fraternity, leadership consultants, member of the Educational Foundation, Regents and Officers of the national organization.  The only real requirement is the willingness to help and take an interest in the young men of the fraternity.   Additionally, we annually host  Alumni Homecoming and The Kimball Classic Golf Tournament in Norman.  Visit the Alumni page for a better feel of what is means to be a Delta Chi Alumnus.

We hope that this answers some of the questions you might have about what it means to join our organization.  Please, if you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact me, any other chapter officer or any member of the Alumni Board of Trustee's.

 Sincerely,

 David Gleason,  "A" - President

“How can I get involved?”

A Delta Chi Chapter/Colony serves as a support network for your son away from home, but it will never replace the need for family support in what they do. There are several ways for you to continue in the growth of your son's life while he is an member or associate member of Delta Chi.

1.  Alumni Board of Trustees (ABT)
2.  Parent's Club
3.  Initiated as an Alumnus

Could I be initiated with my son?

Fathers, uncles, prominent businessmen, faculty staff of the university or anyone who has an interest in giving support for the fraternity may have the privilege of becoming an alumni initiate.  The main requirement are your sincere support for the betterment of the chapter/colony and its members and no previous membership in any other college social fraternity.   This  is an indescribable experience to be initiate with your son or in his fraternity.  Not only to be able to call your son,  a son, but also a brother of Delta Chi.  The initiation fee for fathers is usually waived by the approval of the Executive Director of Delta Chi Fraternity.

Alumni Board of Trustees (ABT):

There is a specific need for parents and family members to volunteer to serve on the Colony's Alumni Board of Trustees. (ABT) Parents, family and anyone who has an interest in seeing to the development of young men may become members of the ABT.  Although Delta Chi Law dictates that a majority of the board members must be initiated Delta Chi members.   The board usually meets in the student union on the second floor (room assignment is not made until the week of) on the second Sunday of every month.

Often times, the difference between slow growth and booming success in a Chapter hinges on alumni and family support.

Parent’s Club/Association:

Support for your son can add significantly to his experience as a Delta Chi. Chapters across North America have started to form Parent’s Clubs/Associations to give them a formal venue to contribute their time, talent and resources to the chapter.  These clubs can help organize Dad’s and Mom’s Weekends events, receptions for recruitment events,  gift baskets like  cookies and other goodies  for the guys during finals, and other fun activities.

These clubs usually take two or three parents willing to champion the effort and get things started, and the rewards can last for generations. Mom’s weekend auctions, where mothers put together care packages, cookies, gift certificates, and such item and auction them off to help raise funds for chapter improvement projects or scholarships. Events like this add to the family feel of Delta Chi, by getting to know your son's friends and brothers.  This drives home the point that you care about the your sons overall personal development and his experiences of being  of member of Delta Chi.
